Some tips on what to wear for your portrait session…

  • Choose plain coloured clothing so that your face is the main feature. You will stand out from the rest of the group if you wear strong patterns or dominant logos.
  • Keep to muted tones, as some colours particularly reds, oranges and yellows can make you appear larger.
  • Bring along a black top with sleeves, this looks fab against a black background, or for black and white shots!
  • Choose similar tones for your top and bottom half (both dark or both light). A white top with dark trousers can make your top look bigger and vice versa.
  • Try and keep to 1-3 colours for your group portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and have everyone work within that colour palette. For example: dark green, navy, and burgundy – all dark jewel tones. Or tan, a lighter olive green, and denims – all lighter, softer tones. Bridal party group photos look so good because they’re all wearing the same colours and the people stand out!
  • Choose a top with sleeves at least to the elbow, again we want the focus to be on your face.
  • Choose long trousers or dresses and skirts below the knee, so that your legs don’t take attention from your face, and you will also be able to sit and bend without showing too much leg!
  • Wear dark socks and footwear (unless it’s a barefoot photo) as white can be quite distracting in your portrait.
  • Keep jewellery simple and minimalistic, too much will draw attention from your face.
  • Do your hair and makeup the way you would normally do it while wearing these clothes.
